A leading government advisory group has said that UK businesses could be incentivised to encourage a reduction in carbon emissions. With the global lockdown caused by the Covid-19 crisis, carbon emissions are expected to fall to their lowest ever levels since records began. Now the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is recommending that funds put aside for economic recovery should go to companies which make a commitment to reducing emissions. The CCC Chairman, Lord Deben, said: “The Covid-19 crisis has shown the importance of planning well for the risks the country faces. “Recovery means investing in new jobs, cleaner air and improved health. The actions needed to tackle climate change are central to rebuilding our economy. “The government must prioritise actions that reduce climate risks and avoid measures that lock-in higher emissions.” The Government is committed to reducing emissions to Net Zero and with the UK set to host a vital global climate conference in 2021, there will be increased focus on the nation’s collective efforts to create a greener society. Lord Deben has encouraged the Government to consider setting a global example in the eventual aftermath of Covid-19.
