A survey of more than 500 UK businesses has revealed that climate change is not being considered as a major priority or a risk to many companies. The research, which was conducted by AI firm Cervest found that while three out of four businesses expected present or future threats to their business as a result of the climate crisis, only one in ten had actually measured those anticipated risks and disclosed them. The findings from the Cervest report suggest that the majority (72 per cent) of businesses polled agreed that climate change was being politicised at board level, although four out five firms answering the survey believed that the government was not doing enough to support the transition to net-zero. Interestingly, four out of five companies also stated that they would welcome stricter climate regulation. Iggy Bassi, founder and chief executive of Cervest, said: “Our findings show that businesses are unclear of the risks that climate presents to them, and the potential price tag that goes with that. Bearing the brunt of this current pandemic will be an immediate focus for many companies. But the long term cost of ignoring climate change threatens to be far more severe than the expense of putting strategies in place today.” Twenty-eight percent of those polled pointed to a lack of understanding of the climate change debate.
