CarSupermarket.com’s pioneering partnership with carbon streaming experts, iOffset, sees the company underline their Carbon Neutral credentials by offsetting 2.5 tonnes of CO2 for every vehicle sold. Carbon offsetting is the process whereby a business or individual can compensate for their unavoidable emissions by funding an equivalent CO2 saving elsewhere, for example by investing in solar and wind energy projects or planting trees.
Since the scheme started in July 2020, CarSupermarket.com have offset 33,000 tonnes of carbon, and are well on course to reach their target of 50,000 tonnes in their first year. The equivalent carbon saving is equal to the planting 33,000 broadleaf trees that can absorb one tonne of CO2 over a hundred year lifetime. In addition to their carbon offsetting partnership with iOffset, CarSupermarket.com and their parent company MotorDepot have forged ahead with their Climate Action strategy by partnering with The Plant a Tree Today Foundation and planting 2,500 trees in South Cave near Hull just down the road from their Hessle showroom.
“We are pleased that CarSupermarket.com chose to support local tree planting in addition to the work they support via offsetting projects and it’s great to see how local companies are seeing the opportunity to do the right thing and support project both around the world and also in their own backyard almost” Dr Andrew Steel, PATT Foundation
Steve Butterley, Managing Director, MotorDepot Group said: “Motoring consumers are increasingly aware of their impact on the environment and this partnership with iOffset has given our customers the option of going greener, without having to consider that big jump to an electric vehicle. “The partnership with iOffset is a win-win for our ambition to take the lead on climate issues. We are supporting carbon offsetting projects around the world and climate conscious customers have bought into our ideals by providing uplift in online traffic and enquiries. It’s an encouraging early sign that the British motoring public have an appetite to support climate action initiatives.”
Mark Hammond, Founder, iOffset said: “We are delighted that this UK first initiative has provided tangible results in the form of more than 33,000 tonnes of carbon offset and thousands of trees planted here in the UK” “The motor industry has been at the sharp end of what looks like an intensive road to net zero, with a total ban on combustion engines planned for 2035. We have to congratulate companies like Motordepot for taking the initiative early.”
