As latest analysis suggests that the Covid-19 crisis could lead to the largest ever annual fall in CO2 emissions, iOffset, a UK- based ethical carbon streaming platform is offering consumers and businesses the opportunity to take action by reducing and offsetting their footprint for the price of a cup of coffee every month. Developed utilising carbon footprint calculations generated by one of the UK’s leading carbon experts, iOffset uniquely retire credits in the name of both individual consumers and corporate customers to ensure absolute trust and transparency. Analysis from leading environmental publication, Carbon Brief, has found that the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent cuts in transport use, electricity demand and industrial activity could create emission reductions in 2020 in the region of 1.6 trillion tonnes of CO2 – a bigger dip than the Second World War, the early 1990s recession and the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918/19. However, these anticipated gains are expected to quickly rebound, unless the pandemic forces a lasting change in attitudes towards net-zero emissions. Mark Hammond, Co-founder of iOffset has worked with one of the UK’s leading carbon experts, Professor Mike Berners-Lee, author of “How Bad are Banana’s: The Carbon Footprint of Everything” and “There’s No Planet B” to model carbon footprint examples for the average UK citizen. These models are now the basis for iOffset’s carbon streaming platform, a monthly subscription service aimed at both consumers and businesses, allowing carbon-conscious individuals to do the right thing reducing and offsetting their remaining carbon footprint from as little as £3 a month, with the average footprint of 13 tonnes costing £7 per month – comparable to a Netflix subscription. To coincide with World Earth Day on April 22nd, Mark is hoping the drop in CO2 emissions can be aided by a tipping- point in people taking responsibility, taking action and ultimately reducing their carbon emissions. *Mark Hammond, Co-founder, iOffset said: “The environmental impact of Covid-19 enforced lockdown has been significant, and it would be a huge boost if that momentum continues once this crisis is over not least as people want to do something but didn’t previously know what or how to take action against climate change. “Our platform is based on the three principles of, Reduce, Offset and Share. Fundamentally, we all need to reduce our carbon footprint and take action now. iOffset provides consumers with simple and sustainable suggestions to reduce their CO2 footprint and make a difference. “Residual emissions from diet, driving or energy consumption can be subsequently offset via projects endorsed by the world’s leading carbon registries such as the United Nations Climate Neutral Now and Gold Standard where credits are retired or cancelled in the name of the consumer or business to aid transparency. “We need to work together and share the message of carbon reduction and offsetting. The iOffset platform provides all subscribers with a personal webpage to share on social media to encourage friends and family to also reduce and offset their emissions.” iOffset’s projects range from local tree planting partnerships in Lancashire to international clean energy solutions, which are recognised and endorsed by the United Nation’s own Carbon Offset programme for projects that are certified to reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. Miguel Naranjo, Programme Officer from The UN Climate Neutral Now said “Climate Neutral Now, an initiative of the UN Climate Change secretariat, is proud to support iOffset in their ambition to offset the greenhouse emissions. “While we transform our economy to a carbon neutral one through a transition in our technologies and processes, offsetting represents one tool to accelerate such transition and support developing countries in the process. “Where greenhouse gas emissions cannot be totally avoided at this point in time, compensation through credible offsets can help encourage further emission reductions and we are glad to see this concept extending in the UK.”
