The pandemic lockdown has had a huge effect on cutting emissions across the United Kingdom, with fewer cars on the roads and some factories at a standstill, carbon emissions have seen their biggest drop since records began. And now iOffset are encouraging businesses across Britain to continue the momentum by offsetting their own carbon emissions. Forty per cent of the nation’s electricity came from coal a little over ten years ago, but that balance has been tipped in favour of renewables in recent times and earlier this month a significant landmark was met when the previous coal-free period was beaten – there has been no coal generators turned on since April 9th. In total, 37 per cent of the country’s electricity has been provided by renewable sources in 2020, compared to 35 per cent of fossil fuels. “So far this year renewables have generated more electricity than fossil fuels and that’s never happened before”, says Dr Simon Evans of Carbon Brief. “With gas also in decline, there’s a real chance that renewables will overtake fossil fuels in 2020 as a whole.” The UK’s last four remaining coal power stations are the West Burton A and Ratcliffe-on-Soar power stations in Nottinghamshire, the Kilroot facility in Northern Ireland and the Drax site in Yorkshire. Drax is the country’s biggest power plant, providing five per cent of the country’s electricity has been burning compressed wood pellets in recent months and has plans to convert their two coal plants to gas in the future. iOffset founder Mark Hammond said: “It is a great achievement to tip the UK’s power generation in favour of renewables, one that may go down in history as the tide on fossil fuels changes and we race towards a Net Zero economy. “iOffset are committed to kick starting the carbon reduction and offsetting culture in the UK, by way of our three pillars of action – Reduce, Offset and Sharing. We can all reduce our carbon emissions, even with some minor changes to our lifestyles, and we would always encourage businesses to consider offsetting their carbon footprint. Individually we can make a difference – together we can make change.” Want to find out how your business can make change? iOffset have affordable carbon offsetting plans for businesses of all sizes, starting at just £25 per month.
