Speaking at this week’s UN Climate Action Roundtable, Boris Johnson said that the Presidents and Prime Ministers must ‘commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and secure the planet for the next generation.’ The Prime Minister addressed the meeting via a video link and used the platform ahead of COP26, a global climate conference which the UK is hosting in Glasgow next, to ask leaders how we can rebuild after the pandemic. Johnson said: “As the world continues to deal with coronavirus we must look ahead to how we will rebuild, and how we can seize the opportunity to build back better. “The UK will lead by example, keeping the environment on the global agenda and serving as a launchpad for a global green industrial revolution. But no one country can turn the tide – it would be akin to bailing out a liner with a single bucket. “We cannot let climate action become another victim of coronavirus. Let us be the leaders who secure the very health of the planet for our children, grandchildren and generations to come.” In a week where China committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, the UK is already on course to be carbon zero by 2050 and many within Johnson’s government are calling on the Prime Minister to do more to ensure net zero initiatives are embedded into the coronavirus recovery plans.
