One of the world’s largest tech companies, Amazon, has announced a major initiative aimed at funding sustainable services and technologies. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund will work towards the company’s goal of being net carbon neutral by 2040, ten years ahead of the 2050 Paris agreement. The company currently delivers 10 billion packages a year globally, a business model which comes with a huge cost to the environment with both transportation and data centre footprints. CEO Jeff Bezos announced the $2bn (£1.6bn) investment to the Climate Pledge Fund would invest in companies in multiple industries relating to Amazon’s business model, including transportation, storage, energy generation as well as food and agriculture. “The Climate Pledge Fund will look to invest in the visionary entrepreneurs and innovators who are building products and services to help companies reduce their carbon impact and operate more sustainably,” said Amazon chief executive Bezos. “Companies from around the world of all sizes and stages will be considered, from pre-product startups to well-established enterprises. “Each prospective investment will be judged on its potential to accelerate the path to zero carbon and help protect the planet for future generations.” Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser and Infosys are some of the companies already invested in the initiative. It’s not the first time in 2020 that Jeff Bezos has delivered a financial boost to green issues. In February the Amazon chief committed $10 billion to fund scientists, activists and non-profits in the fight to save the environment.
